Painting a New Perspective

Aside from being a scientist, some of you may know me as a dancer, fashion designer, short-story writer and a good cook. I have recently discovered another side of me. On October 2nd, 2009, I woke up and felt a strong urge to become a painter. That same day, I went to an art store and purchased lots of equipment and supplies for oil painting. Previously I had never painted before but within me I found the hope and confidence to become a painter.

I was born in a very small village in the Java Island of Indonesia. My village is less than 2 miles from an oak forest and approximately 10 miles from the small city. Art has always been a major part of my life since my childhood. My parents always taught me to appreciate the beauty of nature. Behind our house was a garden with a lot of trees: mango, banana, papaya, coconut and others, then an open field farm. Every morning when we opened our eyes, we were exposed to the beautiful sunrise over the rice field, while the melodious sounds of birds could be heard.

Some people worked as farmers, others in the village worked crafting home-made furniture. In that time there was no electricity, and you could see the sky painted with stars. On certain nights, the moon would shine brightly near the border of the constellations. Dancing and singing were the other activities that entertained us almost every day. We had no TV, video games or other technology. I love to write short stories. Most of them have never been published and I did not keep careful records of them. A few stories have been published in Kobe University School of Medicine Journal. I also love to design clothing, mostly for my dear friends and also cook with my own recipes. I wish that someday I would have time to put together in this site.

Besides art, I love math and science. Science gives my imagination life. I got my doctoral degree in molecular pathology which was followed by postdoctoral work in immunology and biochemistry, several years worked in academia before moved to industrial. I have been working in industrial (biotechnology and biopharma) in the field of oncology since 2012. Painting helps me to relax and think creatively.
